When 10-year-old Karter was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer, his world—and that of his family—was turned upside down. Osteosarcoma, which primarily affects the long bones of children and young adults, most commonly impacts the arms, legs, or pelvis. In Karter's case, the cancer was located in his humerus, the bone of his upper arm.
Karter’s parents, overwhelmed by the gravity of the diagnosis, immediately sought out the best medical care for their son. They quickly learned that his treatment would be long, complex, and incredibly expensive, involving chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor, and potentially even limb salvage procedures or amputation. As the medical bills began to mount, Karter’s family faced a new challenge: how to afford the care he needed while also providing emotional and physical support for him during this difficult time.
That’s when they turned to the American Children’s Cancer Benevolence Fund (ACCBF).
Osteosarcoma is a rare form of bone cancer that primarily affects adolescents, though it can occur at any age. It usually begins in the osteoblasts, which are the cells responsible for forming new bone. For children like Karter, a diagnosis of osteosarcoma means undergoing aggressive treatments, which often involve both chemotherapy and surgery.
Despite the high success rate for survival when osteosarcoma is diagnosed early, the treatment is demanding and can leave families struggling with the financial burden. For Karter’s family, the cost of his treatment was staggering, with bills for hospital stays, surgeries, outpatient care, and travel expenses for specialized treatments far exceeding what they could afford on their own.
Faced with these mounting costs, Karter’s parents began reaching out to local foundations and organizations that could provide financial assistance. That’s when they discovered the American Children's Cancer Benevolence Fund (ACCBF), a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families who are struggling with the financial burdens of childhood cancer treatment. The ACCBF helps cover a variety of expenses, including medical bills, transportation costs for families seeking out-of-town care, and even day-to-day living expenses when a parent has to take time off work to care for a sick child.
The ACCBF’s assistance was a priceless for Karter’s family, giving them some breathing room during an incredibly stressful and uncertain time. The organization worked closely with Karter’s parents to assess their needs, offering some financial assistance that helped them stay afloat.
